While critical response to Looking has been lukewarm -- from being lauded to being called downright sexless -- there's still nothing else quite like it on TV (sorry Modern Family). But three episodes in, is Looking finally starting to say anything new about gay people? Does watching an new episode delight, inspire or at least entertain, much the way Sex and the City did in its heyday?
In episode 3, Patrick continues his string of romantic missteps, this time managing to hit on his sorta hot new boss (a Brit no less!), who pulls off that "is he or isn't he?" vibe with sexy aplomb. And the prospect of a little sexual tension at the workplace seems promising enough, though seeing another booze-riddled, cring-worthy OKCupid date wouldn't be so bad, either.
As for Dom -- still by far the most appealing, authentic character thus far -- he's casually hooking up on Grindr or at a bathhouse and thus getting most of the on-screen sex (and looking mighty fine while doing it!). Oh, and he still wants to start his own Portuguese chicken restaurant (is this plotline really going anywhere?). Then there's Agustin, who's rapidly crystalizing into a self-entitled, spoiled and downright rude piece of work! First, he insults his boss and gets canned on the spot, and then complains about it in a cafe to a random stranger (who turns out to be a sex worker, of course!). But we all have Agustins in our lives, dont' we, and he could always fit right in on this year's mean-spirited season of Girls.
Best Line: "I don't think I've seen you this perky since you dragged me to see 'Miss Congeniality' -- and that was a very long time ago." - Doris to Dom, en route to their Zoomba class.
Now it's your turn. What was your favorite part of the episode 3? Is Looking a breakthrough or a bust for gay characters on TV? Leave your comments and take our poll!
Its' getting better, but not there yet
