HIV BREAKTHROUGH: Can stem cell procedure really be a permanent 'cure' for HIV?

Can this really be true? According to numerous reports, doctors believe an HIV-positive man who underwent a stem cell transplant has been cured as a result of the procedure.

According to the Huffington Post report, Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient," received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukemia. These findings were then recently published in the journal Blood affirming that the results of extensive testing "strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved."

This, along with another stunning recent report that indicated that healthy individuals who take antiretrovirals -- medicine commonly prescribed for treating HIV -- can reduce their risk of contracting the disease by up to 73 percent, are incredibly exciting developments.

Still too many questions.

My greatest fear is that some will read this as gospel in terms of a cure and take unneeded risk. This is by no means a mainstream therapy to HIV infection in the general population.

I hope people will read past the headlines and hype and review the entire story complete with all of its clinical details.

I hope for a cure in the future, hopefully in our lifetime, and hopefully this is the beginning of a promising new arm of research that will lead us to that day.

I know stem cells are very powerful, but my bigger concern is how these latest breakthroughs will affect attitudes toward safer sex practices.

I have seen the poppy flower in a ting vaglile near Thai/Burma border. They have red / orange / white colors flower.The seedpods are green. I scraped the seedpod with a stick and they smell so nasty. I think they boil the sap/juice to make black opium. Any way the vegetable that grow in poppy field are very very tasty. I tried it once and still remember the taste of it. :-) That was a small town in Kachin state.
